Proof of health insurance

For enrolment at a German university, you either need German health insurance or an official exemption from German health insurance, e.g. because you permanently live abroad. In either case you need confirmation by a German health insurance provider, to be submitted to THWS. Without this document you cannot enrol at THWS.

EU, EEA and countries with social security agreements

If you live in one of the following countries, your health insurance will be recognised:

  • European Union (EU): Apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your country.
  • European Economic Area (EEA) countries
  • Countries which have a social security agreement with Germany: Bosnia Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Türkiye, Tunisia.

In this case please contact your country’s health insurance provider and apply for form S1 (or E-111, AT 11, ATN 11, BH6) in your home country. Please do NOT send the confirmation document by your home insurance to THWS; instead, contact a German health insurance provider (e.g. AOK, Barmer, DAK or TK), who will the review your insurance status.

If your health insurance is recognised, the German health insurance provider will exempt you from German health insurance and send the confirmation document directly to THWS for your enrolment.

Other countries

If you have permanent residence in a country other than those mentioned above, please contact a German health insurance provider (e.g. AOK, Barmer, DAK or TK) in order for them to issue the required document and submit it to THWS.
