Environmental psychology shows the interplay between people and the environment in order to promote well-being and sustainable behaviour. You will acquire practical skills in counselling, behavioural analysis, and intervention and broaden your understanding of societal challenges through interdisciplinary perspectives. The focus is also on scientific work: You will plan research projects and analyse data to apply psychological findings in health and environment-related areas.

- You can also work in the public sector and with non-governmental organisations to tackle social challenges

Qualification goals and intended learning outcomes
In a scientifically sound and practice-oriented way, the programme prepares students for the complex challenges in the field of health and environmental psychology. In view of the increasing societal, economic, and ecological issues, e.g. demographic change, digitalisation, migration, and environmental crises, highly qualified psychological experts are needed to accompany individual, societal and structural change processes.
In the course of the degree programme, you develop a deep understanding of the psychological mechanisms impacting health, well-being, and environmental behaviour. Students build expert knowledge on health-psychological theories, interventions, prevention measures, and environmental-psychological concepts that can be applied in order to promote sustainable behaviour and to create health-beneficial living spaces. We aim to enable our students to develop academically sound solutions to pressing issues of society, e.g. promotion of health, climate adjustments, sustainable urban planning, or prevention of psychological stresses due to environmental changes.
Linking health and environmental psychology is one of our core objectives. The reciprocal effects of environmental factors and mental and physical health are becoming increasingly important, either directly in cases of air pollution or extreme weather events, or indirectly through psychological effects like eco-anxiety or stress. Students learn to analyse these effects and create targeted measures to promote resilience, well-being, and sustainable behaviour. Not only does the programme promote theoretical and methodological competences, but it also focuses on practical application. We prepare our students to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and apply their psychological expertise in different areas, from healthcare and environmental consulting to politics. In practice-oriented modules, case studies, and the integrated internship, students build the competences necessary to develop and implement evidence-based measures in real-life work contexts.
The degree programme is directed at future experts who want to actively contribute to solving societal issues. The graduates contribute significantly to creating a healthier and more sustainable society by applying their psychological knowledge to increase well-being and assume ecological responsibility.
Is Health and Environmental Psychology the right programme for you?
Are you interested in how psychological processes influence health, behaviour, and well-being? Do you want to understand how our environment shapes our thoughts and actions and how you can initiate sustainable change? If you answer yes to these questions, Health and Environmental Psychology could be the right degree programme for you.
The degree programme is aimed at anyone who wants to research and practically apply psychological relationships in a global context. The programme is particularly suitable if you do not only want to understand social challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, or health inequalities, but also want to actively contribute to their solution. You should be curious about academic work and be prepared to critically analyse different perspectives. The fully English-taught degree programme offers you the flexibility to combine learning and everyday life.
